“Come on, let's play a game” — A circus show and interactive discussion on the topic of growing up

As a child, being an adult seems really cool: you’re free, you can decide what you want to do and when. It seems as though adults are the ones who set the rules. Adults take on responsibility, make decisions, and interact with one another in society.

Today, we’re no longer children. But we’re not “real” adults who have their lives completely under control either. What we’ll ultimately shape in the future remains to be seen. Nevertheless, society already has expectations of us, and there also seem to be rules of the game that we don’t necessarily understand. Where do we fit in, and do we want to play along? What responsibilities do we bear?

This is precisely the starting point for our contemporary circus show “Come, Let’s Play a Game.” Together, the six of us—young people from the self-organized circus collective Gewürzspekulazius—developed this show last year on the theme of growing up.

In the 25-minute show, the six performers explore, through the language of the circus, what it means to grow up in today’s society: What place do we have? What rules apply? Through acrobatics, we feel our way across the stage and search for our place by playfully questioning society’s expectations of us and our own ideas about growing up.

Afterward, we’ll lead an interactive audience discussion. It’s important to us to engage in a cross-generational exchange with all audience members on the topic of growing up.
