How can prefabricated buildings be renovated to meet future energy standards without losing their architectural character? This article explores the tension between energy efficiency, historic preservation, and design. The focus is on how to preserve the typical facade features—grid patterns, panel joints, exposed aggregate concrete, split clinker, exposed concrete, and original color schemes—while simultaneously meeting contemporary energy requirements.
Using technical and design-oriented approaches, the article examines the possibilities and limitations of various renovation strategies. Among other things, it addresses the impact on floor plans and room sizes, the integration of modern building services, and the question of which solutions remain economically viable and rentable in the long term. Rather than presenting one-size-fits-all solutions, the presentation offers diverse perspectives on the challenges of renovating existing buildings and highlights the potential inherent in the sensitive further development of prefabricated panel building architecture.
