Rainer Rehak

Rainer Rehak is a research associate in the “Digitalization, Sustainability, and Participation” group at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society; he is also a research associate at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and earned his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Berlin on systemic IT security and societal data protection.

He studied computer science and philosophy in Berlin and Hong Kong and has been exploring the implications of society’s computerization for over 15 years. His research areas include technology assessment, collective data protection, systemic IT security, state hacking, computer science and ethics, technological fiction, digitalization and sustainability, convivial and democratic digital technology, the epistemic foundations of automation, digital (de)colonialism, and the implications and limitations of AI systems.

He also publishes regularly in non-academic media and serves as an expert consultant.
