Hip-Hop & Democracy Workshop: Youth Culture, Freedom, and Us

The workshop “Youth Culture, Freedom, and Us” combines contemporary history,
hip-hop culture, and democracy education. It begins by asking how young people in the GDR coped with limited freedom and what forms of expression, community, and self-empowerment they developed—and what that has to do with our lives today.

The workshop is structured in three parts and designed to be accessible to all:
1. A brief introduction uses digital content to provide insights into the everyday lives of young people in the GDR, caught between conformity, control, and self-assertion.
2. This is followed by a discussion with contemporary witnesses, offering a personal perspective on youth culture, repression, and creative freedom. In the hands-on portion, participants take an active role—they develop their own initial forms of expression, such as through simple graffiti sketches, rhythm and beat exercises, or physical movement. The focus is not on perfection, but on expression, attitude, and shared experience.
3. A group reflection connects these experiences to contemporary questions: What does freedom mean today? Where do we encounter limits, and where do we find room for creativity?

The workshop is grounded in an understanding of hip-hop in the GDR that views it not as a marginal phenomenon, but as a cultural practice of participation and self-empowerment. This perspective is explored in the workshop and linked to current issues of democracy, social cohesion, and cultural participation.

The workshop is aimed particularly at teenagers and young adults, but is open to anyone interested. It addresses central themes of the KOSMOS Festival—such as democracy, intergenerational dialogue, and pop culture—and offers a dynamic exploration of how we want to live together today and in the future.
