During the Cosmos Festival, the Chemnitz label 'raster' will stage a light and sound installation at the Lapidarium, in close proximity to the Schlossberg Museum. The stone artifacts from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods of Chemnitz's city history will become part of an experimental interaction of time, space/architecture, light, and sound. The basis of the raster.pavilion is the installation work 'Schwellen/Threshold'.

"thresholds"

is a light and sound installation that is particularly suitable for interacting with the specific architectural situation of a room or public space. Currently, 96 neon tubes each 2 meters in length form the basis for a flexible light sculpture that adapts to the respective space. This 'sculpture' is completed by a multi-channel composition, which ideally is also created on-site to incorporate the unique acoustic situation.

an interface (sound to DMX) and a specially programmed software allow for the manipulation of the tubes' brightness individually or in groups, depending on the sounds being played. The transformation of sound waves into light waves is realized through an analog control voltage. In combination with minimal gas pressure fluctuations within the tubes, this results in very homogeneous, lively translations into light. The analog charm of the used technology allows for very intimate, organic situations in the space. This can also stand in contrast to a monumental

assert the architectural idea.

Since 2003, the artistic platform 'Raster' has been experimenting with these neon tubes. They are manufactured in Thuringia and were originally developed for outdoor advertising in the 1920s, which is why they can also be used in public spaces.
