Philipp Baumgarten

Philipp Baumgarten (born in 1985 in Zeitz) works as a photographer, editor, and media artist at the intersection of documentary photography, cultural history, and social transformation. After studying media production and art history in Dresden and Karlsruhe, and working at the Institute for Visual Media at the ZKM in Karlsruhe, he returned to his hometown of Zeitz and co-founded the Kloster Posa cultural and educational center. His work focuses primarily on the upheavals and ruptures in rural East Germany. In 2023, he received the Georg-Christoph-Biller Prize for his cultural and civic engagement. Most recently, he co-edited the volume *OSTFLIMMERN – Wir Wende-Millennials* (Mitteldeutscher Verlag, 2024) with Annekathrin Kohout. Photographs from his long-term project *mitteldeutsch* were presented in 2025–26 in the exhibition “Ostblicke” at the Museum in the Kulturbrauerei of the Haus der Geschichte Foundation in Berlin.
